Leafs stop Bruins 6-2 to increase lead in Murdoch Division to four points

The Nelson Leafs increased its lead in the Murdoch Division to four points by stopping the Grand Forks Border Bruins 6-2 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action Thursday night in the Boundary City.

The win was the fourth straight for the Leafs, all against Murdoch Division opponents.

Dustin Reimer, Bryce Nielsen, Carsen Willans, Damin Devlin, Colton Schell and Blake Arcuri scored for the Leafs.

Nelson, 10-5-1-0, held period leads of 2-1 and 5-2.

Nelson returns home Saturday to meet the Kamloops Storm at 7 p.m. in the NDCC Arena.

For the second consecutive game the Nelson Leafs struggled in the first period.

But this was the Grand Forks Border Bruins Nelson was playing are not the North Okanagan Knights.

The Leafs overcame the slow start, scoring five times in the final two frames to dump the lowly Bruins 7-2 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action Saturday night at the NDCC Arena.

The win snaps a two-game slide for the Leafs.

Nelson concludes the three-game weekend with a game Sunday afternoon in Spokane.

The news has been out circulating around the NDCC Arena for some time that Detroit Red Wings coach Tom Renney was assisting at Nelson Leafs.

But the opportunity to rub shoulders with a person with National Hockey League rink-side credentials never gets stale to players young and old.

Renney, along with hockey fans right across North American, is waiting for the next shoe to drop in the current NHL labour dispute.

To bide his time the former Edmonton Oiler skipper decided to volunteer his time with the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League franchise.

The Selkirk Saints continue shine on the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League.

The Saints struck four times in the second period to blast Trinity Western Spartans 6-1 in BCIHL action Friday night at the Castlegar Complex.

The win christened the home season for the Saints and moves the Saints to 3-0 on the season for first place in league standings.

"We came out hard wanting to make a positive impression on the home crowd and get them into the game," said Saints head coach Jeff Dubois.

Rebels surge into Murdoch Division penthouse

Thanks in part to a two-out-of-three win weekend, the Castlegar Rebels surged atop the Neil Murdoch Division as the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League completed its first month of the season.

The Rebels looked like world-beaters during the two wins, scoring a total of 15 goals against Grand Forks and Spokane.

However, it was the offence that dried up against visiting North Okanagan Knights Saturday at the Community Complex Arena in Castlegar as the Rebels lost 4-1.

UPDATE: Beaver Valley forward Brandon Butlin back home resting after night in hospital

It appears Beaver Valley forward Brandon Butlin suffered a severe concussion after being checked near the boards during Saturday night’s Kootenay International Junior Hockey League at the NDCC Arena between the Leafs and Nitehawks.

The hit, happening with 2:45 remaining in the third period, silenced the more than 300 people in attendance.

“When (Beaver Valley head coach) Terry (Jones) got to the hospital last night (Brandon) was talking,” said assistant coach Jeremy Cominotto told The Nelson Daily Sunday.

Obviously not the start head coach Mario DiBella and the Kootenay Ice wanted.

The North Island Silvertips got better as the games progressed as the Island rep stomped the Kootenay Ice 5-1 and 10-2 in B.C. Hockey Major Midget League action this past weekend at the NDCC Arena.

The weekend series was the first games of the season for both teams.

Sunday, Kootenay trailed North Island by a single goal after 20 minutes.

 We have a team here folks! Congratulations to team President Dave Grootjes and the Bruins Executive. I have been waiting for this for four years. Even though we lost our first game, there is lots of talent on the ice and huge potential for this season.

Kids Duathlon race set for Saturday at Trail's Gyro Park

Saturday (September 29) the Trail Parks and Rec is hosting a Kids Duathlon race at Gryro Park.

The race, for children ages four to 12, is a run-bike-run event beginning at 10 a.m.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. at Gyro with race orientation 45 minutes prior to the start of the event.

Cost is $22 per registrant.
