If life is a mystery, uncertain and full of risk, then you are living it well

If life is a mystery, uncertain and full of risk, then you are living it well

Pope Benedict is retiring. Nelson is national news for its dog-ban bylaw. Tornadoes and blizzards have hit eastern regions of the continent. A fired L. A. cop commits suicide after a murder spree. BC’s Legislature is back in session. The Grammies have been awarded. The Canucks had a streak of wins but just lost it.

This, if you let our news media define it for you, is your world. These are the things people need to know and want to talk about. This is the socially-constructed reality we have apparently agreed to endorse.

IN REVIEW: DECK controversy ends with a great show

IN REVIEW: DECK controversy ends with a great show

By: Rosemary Phillips, contributor

A review of: DECK Or How I Instigated Then Overcame An Existential Crisis Through Home Improvement”, an absolutely brilliant and totally hilarious one-person comedic play written and performed by Lucas Myers of Nelson, BC.

But first a little background. The need for community involvement began with censorship by certain members of the Grand Forks (BC) community in response to the mention of 'partial nudity' and 'not suitable for children' in promotional materials.

In Winter Wonder time mittens are a must—and a magnifying glass, too

In Winter Wonder time mittens are a must—and a magnifying glass, too

It’s Winter Wonder time! Primary students all over the snowy Columbia Basin are learning about how plants and animals adapt to winter.

Kids take a magical journey to discover the natural world in winter through these walking field trips, which occur in and around their schoolyards and neighbourhoods. Exploring snow crystals and their formation, students become detectives, with magnifying glasses and crystal identification sheets.

Gallery 2 is gearing up for the second annual Masquerade Ball. This great new fundraiser is scheduled at just the right time when one needs to shake off those winter doldrums and what better way to do so than by dancing the night away to the lively rock n’ roll tunes of Mad Dog 20/ 20.

The night of the Masquerade Ball falls during B.C. Heritage Week and Gallery 2’s century old heritage building will provide elegant surroundings for this Venetian style masquerade.

Happily ever after - an author's journey to success

Happily ever after - an author's journey to success

Dani Collins has been writing in one form or another for over two decades, occasionally even for money. (She wrote for the Grand Forks Gazette in 2007-08.)

Her preference is romance novels.  She found them in high school and has wanted to publish her own ever since.

The Pharmasave team has been busy this year raising money for worthy causes. From the Relay for Life, to Mo’vember and now the Team in Training, the owners and staff at Pharmasave have given, with a little help from their friends, to fight cancer.

Throughout January, Pharmasave Grand Forks held a Super Bowl Fundraiser in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Part of the Team In Training, the world's largest and most successful endurance sports training program for charity, they raised funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.

Heritage comes to the gallery

Got a story to tell?

Gallery 2 has a heritage component to it and they've decided that this year they are going to try engaging the community with 'living books' and they're launching this during the upcoming Heritage Week Feb. 18 to 24.

Existential ego at the end of time

Existential ego at the end of time

Humanity ascends from the realm of necessity to the realm of freedom– Friedrich Engels, in Socialism: Utopian and Scientific

The meaning of Life is discovering our gift; the purpose is to give it away– chalkboard on Baker St. in Nelson

My last column described the Baby Boomers at some length, so today I will sound off with comments on that generation (my own) and its materialist excess--hyper-capitalism and ego-drive.

Christina Lake Winterfest some family fun in the sun

Hannah Bartlett took first place in the children's luge race during the annual Winterfest celebrations. The luge was one of many new events featured at the family fun event. Photo Erin Perkins.

Speeding dog sleds, racing luge sleds and entertaining music made for great family fun at the Christina Lake's annual Winterfest celebrations this past weekend.

Hundreds came out to enjoy the great weather and the snow at the Christina Lake Commuity Hall. The event, which is made possible by 74 volunteers and the generous donations by business and community organizations, was another success.

The new events met with great enthusiasm especially the children's luge race which involved making the cardboard sleds and then racing them down a hill.

LIBRARY MUSINGS: Call for volunteers!

LIBRARY MUSINGS: Call for volunteers!

Hi Grand Folks!

You might be just the person we’re looking for. Yes, you. Let me explain: we’re looking for enthusiastic community members who might want to join the library board of directors. Ideally, we’d like our board to be made up of a mix of women and men, of all ages (though the BC Library Act does require that you be 18 years and older).
