The Government of BC has been on a borrowing and spending spree for about eight years. A lot of this is being done using the “Public-Private Partnership” model (P3) of which the former Premier Campbell was exceedingly fond.

Parents of B.C. newborns named Liam and Emma not alone

It was a banner year for newborns in B.C. in 2011.

Parents naming their newborn baby Liam and Emma are not alone according to the 140th edition of the British Columbia Vital Statistics Agency Annual Repor.

Liam and Emma are the most popular names for B.C. babies born in 2011 according to the annual report from the British Columbia Vital Statistics Agency.

The most widely selected names for boys were Liam, Ethan, Mason, Lucas and Benjamin.

The top five names for girls were Emma, Olivia, Sophia, Ava and Chloe. In 2011, there were a total of 43,991 births in B.C., up from 43,670 in 2010.

Sadly, an average of 34 people are killed and 7,110 injured in 4,740 crashes every December on B.C. roads, making it one of the highest months of the year for crashes.

Now that the winter season has kicked into full swing on road conditions across B.C. driving can be both challenging and unpredictable. Which is why ICBC is asking drivers who will be travelling during the holidays to get prepared and adjust their driving to the weather conditions.

Surrey RCMP is crediting an alert citizen for helping them successfully arrest a Grinch.

On Dec. 15 around 12 p.m., the Surrey RCMP were dispatched to a report of a suspicious person going door to door in the area of 126th Street and 67B Avenue. The complainant called police after a male came to her door asking for donations to the BC Food Bank.

Things are looking up in the education system after B.C.'s Grade 4 students were graded the world's top readers at their grade level and had the highest average score in Canada, according to a just-released international report.

In 2011, 45 countries and nine Canadian provinces took part in the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), one of the world's most influential global assessments of reading literacy among young students.
