Weather co-operating for B.C. Women's championship golf

The weather decided to participate during second round action of the BC Golf Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championships at Christina Lake Golf Club, giving Christine Wong of Richmond a chance to post a three-under-par 69, 139 total (70-69-139) to take the overall Championship lead by one stroke.

Wong, an upcoming senior at San Diego State University and member of Quilchena G&CC, had an uneventful outward nine only to light up the back, going four-under-par on her final five holes, including an eagle and two birdies.

Six local Christina Lake Golf Club members are set to golf alongside 66 other competitors from across the province during the 2012 British Columbia Women’s Amateur/Mid-Amateur Championships, July 3-6.

Round one tee time starts at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, July 3) and at regular intervals all morning long as the top women golfers test their skills at the 18-hole, par 72, 6,189 yardgolf course known for its black sand traps.

Soccer taking hold across the Boundary

The Boundary Youth Soccer Association rounded off a fun spring season with a Boundary-wide tournament on the soccer fields at Boundary Central Secondary School in Midway, Saturday, June 23.

Hundreds of kids between four and 18, their families and friends spent the day celebrating soccer. The kids played tournament games, got free balloons, had their faces painted and enjoyed a free lunch thanks to the numerous community business donations and volunteers.

Time is running out on youngsters wanting to enter the third annual the Kids-Tri event Saturday, July 7 in Trail.

The race is open to Participants from ages four to 12 with different routes and distances for each age group (4 years; 5-6 years; 7-8 years; 9-10 years; 11-12 years).

Cost is $36.00, and every participant will receive their race package which includes a water bottle, t-shirt, swim cap, ball cap, and treats. 

Competitors also receive a participation medal at the end of the race, and a celebration lunch.

Brenan Moroney of Rossland/Trail needed all 36 holes to squeak out a one-stroke victory to capture the Zone One West Kootenay Junior golf title Sunday at the Balfour course.

Moroney shot a 4-over-par 76 to edge Tyler McKay of Rossland/Trail and Jordan Hoodikoff of Christina Lake for the crown at the Tour Championship tournament.

Saturday golfers flocked to Kokanee Springs for day one of the 36-hole tourney.

The trio of Hoodikoff, McKay and Moroney led the first 18-holes.

Moroney and McKay posted identical 3-over-par 75s while Hoodicoff shot a 77.

Kids-Tri triathlon welcomes all competitors to third annual race July 7 in the Silver City

The Nelson Cyswogn' Fun triathlon has been a big hit for more than 25 years.

However, there's a new triathlon starting to make waves — the Kids-Tri event.

Participants from ages four to 12 are invited to compete in the third-annual event Saturday, July 7, in Trail.

"The race is open to all communities and we encourage young kids to participate in a fun and active event," said a Kids-Tri spokesperson.

Boaters beware and have your boating license handy while enjoying Christina Lake this summer.

Grand Forks RCMP, with help from reserve constable Chris Cottril, opened 142 files on boat related checks last summer and they will be just as proactive this summer in making their checks, said Grand Forks RCMP staff sergeant Jim Harrison.

Most last summer's cases were because the boat operator didn't have an operators license on them while operating the boat, said Harrison.
