80-year-old woman rescued after 48-hour+ ordeal

Betty Lyons, 80, was reported missing to the Grand Forks RCMP after she failed to return to her home in Calgary.  She left Grand Forks on Monday, July 12 at approximately 10 a.m.  Grand Forks RCMP conducted the investigation but LYONS was not located.

On Wednesday, July 14, at 4 p.m, Lyons' vehicle was spotted down an embankment off the Bombi Summit ( Highway 3), just east of Castlegar.  The (victim's) family had supplemented the RCMP efforts by hiring a private helicopter and it was this helicopter that spotted the vehicle.
 
Castlegar RCMP officers attended and climbed down the embankment.  Lyons was located approximately 150-200 feet down the embankment.  The vehicle had gotten hung up in some trees, and Lyons had managed to climb from her vehicle and make her way to the bottom of the embankment, where she laid until her rescue.  She suffered lots of bruising and was hungry and dehydrated, but in amazingly good condition and had her sense of humor intact. 
 
Search and rescue attended the scene to carry Lyons up the embankment and she was taken to the hospital to undergo some tests to ensure her health due to her age. 

RCMP are consulting with the family, who is requesting privacy at this time.
 
RCMP are continuing to investigate the cause of this accident.
