RCMP Sgt John Ferguson West Kootenay Traffic Services said, regardless of the great fall weather, winter is coming and motorists need to start preparing for snow.

“Some are happy to see it and some are not, however the reality is at some point in the near future we will see snow in the mountains,” Ferguson said on a media release.

“The WKTS and Nelson IRSU (Integrated Road Safety Unit) want you to be prepared.”

Ferguson said from the first day in October drivers must have winter tires on if traversing the mountains.

“The question is what is a winter tire?,” Ferguson asks.

“A winter tire is any tire that either has a “3 peaked mountain and snow flake symbol”, OR has the letters “M and S with a tread depth of not less then 3.5 mm”. It is recommended you go to your local tire store and ask them the best tire for driving conditions in this area.”

Ferguson said it’s also important safety check is vehicle headlights.

“If your car is manufactured after 1990 you must have daytime running lights. In many vehicles the module burns out and people do not realize it.”

“Please be safe this winter.”
