Rusty, a three-year-old Shar-pei-Labrador cross found with a chain deeply embedded in his neck, is recovering nicely, according to Kris Lee, animal care attendent at BC SPCA’s East Kootenay Branch in Cranbrook.

Rusty was found near Yahk March 10, and brought to the branch, which then issued a press release asking for help, as Rusty’s recovery care is expected to cost roughlt $2,400.

“He’s doing really well, for going through all of that,” Lee said in an interview Tuesday. “He’s been getting lots of love and attention.”

She said there’s also been a great deal of interest in adopting the dog, after media attention about his plight captured the hearts of dog lovers from around the province.  Rusty’s not yet available to go to his forever home, though, until the veterinarian signs off on his progress.

Lee said the original owners have been identified, but there’s no word yet on the ongoing animal cruelty investigation.

The East Kootenay SPCA is currently caring for 25 animals: 18 cats, six dogs in the facility, and one dog in foster care, so they’re grateful for donations that have come in to help with the medical costs for their charges, Lee said.
