Roller derby returns to Trail with a fierce west-versus-east showdown this Saturday (June 10) at the Cominco Arena.
The action hits the track at 6 p.m. (doors at 5 p.m.) when the Rossland Trail Roller Girls (RTRG) hosts the Bavarian Barbarians from Kimberley in the West + East Roller Derby Bout.
“This is the second time these two teams have come together to battle it out,” explains RTRG captain Christin Davis, aka Roll N Loki. “RTRG was victorious after a tough bout last year in Kimberley and we hope to do the same on our own turf.”
RTRG is one of the few remaining teams in the area after the former West Kootenay Roller Derby League disbanded and RTRG, along with Castlegar’s Dam City Rollers and Nelson’s Killjoys became travel teams.
Though the local teams don’t often face off against each other anymore, the teams play together as pick up players are often borrowed.
There will be some long-time familiar derby faces dressed in red and representing RTRG at this bout, plus a few new fresh players making their debut. The Barbarians have also secured a few all-star level players from local sister teams to round out their roster.
This is the third time live roller derby has made its way to the Trail Arena and RTRG is excited to host a bout and share their love of the game with new and returning fans.
The energy will be high in the arena between the strategic full contact sport, beer garden, 50/50 and derby kids, who always bring another level of fun to the family-friendly event.
Tickets are $10 and free for kids 12 and under. Pick up your tickets today at Bay Avenue Music or Trail Coffee & Tea Company in Trail or at the door.
What the heck is roller derby?
Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five, roller skating in the same direction around a track. Gameplay consists of a series of short matchups (jams) in which both teams designate a scoring player (the jammer), who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer while hindering the opposing jammer — in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously.
