A vehicular fire this morning just off Columbia Avenue on 12 Street caused thousands of dollars in damage, according to Fire Chief Sam Lattanzio.

He said the call came in at 9:29 a.m., and eight fire fighters with two engines and a command vehicle arrived on scene to find a cube van engulfed in flames.

“One of the workers saw the fire and hit it with a 10-lb dry chemical extinguisher,” he said, praising the man’s quick thinking. “The cause is still under investigation.”

Officials believe the blaze may have been caused by fuel leaking onto a hot exhaust system.

“We had (the fire) knocked down and fully extinguished by 10:05 a.m.,” Lattanzio said.

He said the truck is a write-off, but the majority of the damage was to the engine and cab, so most of the tools/equipment inside were salvaged.

No one was injured, and no structures were threatened, but there was some concern about damage to overhead lines, so Fortis was called to the scene as well.

The damage is estimated at roughly $25,000.
