May has so far been a month of rain and sunshine – just the way gardeners like it, and just the way gardens like it. Everywhere you look there are tulips, lilacs, and veggie starts. And I know I’m not the only one who thinks that’s great. You know who else does? Deer, that’s who!

If there’s one thing we like around Grand Forks, its controversy (water metering, anyone?) – and when it comes to the deer problem there are as many opinions as there are people. But here’s something we can all hopefully agree on: if you want to make an informed decision, it helps to be informed. Which is why we’re happy to announce that Laurie Grant from WildSafeBC will be coming to the library to give a presentation on deer and deer-resistant gardening (on Thursday, May 15 at 6:30 pm). You’ll also have an opportunity at the end of the session to provide feedback on what you’d like to see her present on in future workshops.

Board Meeting

We will be having our monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 21 at 4 pm. It’s open to the public, and will be held in the main reading area of the library.

An Artist’s Portrait

Join local artist Sonja Gartner on Thursday, May 22 at 6:30 pm for a slide show of her work, as she discusses her artistic life from childhood to the present.

Pokemon

Looking to trade your Pokemon Cards? Come to the library on Friday, May 23 at 3:30 pm to exchange them with other kids.  All ages welcome – those under 7 must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

Book Club

There’s still time to read our May book, the Kootenay-based Once You Break a Knuckle by D.W. Wilson. Our book club will be meeting on at Christina Lake on Wednesday, May 28 at 1:30 pm, and in Grand Forks on Thursday, May 29 at 7:00 pm – new members are always welcome.

Spoiler Alert

The very talented author Susan Juby will be coming to the library on Tuesday, June 3 at 10 am. She’s written novels for teens and adults, and a great memoir – and teaches creative writing at Vancouver Island University. You won’t want to miss it!
