Ice take it on the chin against Vancouver Northeast Chiefs, swept out during BCMMHL action
On a good day the Kootenay Ice can compete with any other team in the B.C. Hockey Major Midget League.
However, when the Ice do not bring their A-game to the rink bad things happen — like the 10-0 shellacking Kootenay received at the hands of the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs Sunday in Coquitlam.
The Chiefs scored five special teams goals — three coming shorthanded to complete dominate the Ice.
Nicholas Rasovic and Boston Colley each scored twice to power Vancouver to the lopsided victory.
The game was over in the first period as the Chiefs jumped to a 5-0 advantage.
Saturday, the Ice staged a bit of a comeback before dropping a 5-4 decision to Vancouver Northeast.
Kootenay trailed 2-0 and 4-3 at the period intermissions.
Trail’s Jake Lucchini, with his second of the game, brought the Ice to within a goal but was unable to tie up the contest.
Darren Medeiros and Mitch Foyle of Fruitvale also scored for the Ice.
Cole Arcuri of Nelson had three assists.
Cranbrook’s Brett Soles and Kimberley Newell of Nelson shared the netminding duties for Kootenay.
The win pulled Vancouver Northeast into a third-place tie with Greater Vancouver Canadians.
Kootenay, 3-5-2 since the Christmas break, remains tied with South Island Thunderbirds for 10th in the 11-team league.
The Ice meet league-leading Vancouver Northwest Giants in a two-game set beginning Saturday at 8:45 p.m. in Trail’s Cominco Arena.
Sunday the teams play at 9:45 a.m. in Trail.
