GFI 2012 off to some great action and close games

In a complete surprise for patrons of the Grand Forks International baseball tournament, Olympic swimming bronze medalist Richard Weinberger from Victoria threw the official first pitch of the event last night.

Co-ordinator Gerry Foster emceed the ceremonies, held at James Donaldson Park in Grand Forks on Aug. 30, that included the traditional piping in of the teams onto the field by the Grand Forks Pipes and Drums band. Welcoming visitors and players to the tournament, acting mayor Michael Wirischagin congratulated the GFI volunteers for 32 years of dedication in hosting the annual event.

After Wendy Faulkner, winner of this week’s Kootenay’s Best Singer regional competition, sang both the American and Canadian national anthems, Weinberger gave it his best pitch to a Langley Blaze back catcher.

While the tournament’s first games started on Wednesday, Aug. 29 with wins by Thurston County Senators, Parkland Whitesox from Alberta, and Team Canada, the play continued throughout Thursday. The Lewiston Paffle Truckers are back this year to defend their 2011 title, and at the end of Thursday night’s play Seattle Studs were leading the pack with two wins, no losses.

Tournament play continues through the weekend with the money rounds starting on Sunday and final games Monday, Sept. 3.
