Bombers book ticket to medal round of AA Girl's Soccer Championship

The L.V. Rogers booked its ticket into the BC High School AA Girl’s Soccer Championships medal round Friday morning at the Lakeside Pitch in Nelson.

Grace Dehnel scored from the penalty spot and assisted on another goal to lead the Bombers past DW Poppy of Langley 3-0 in A-Pool round robin action.

LVR, defending BC High School AA Girl’s Soccer champs, now advance to the semi-final round later today against St. Thomas Moore of Burnaby.

The game is a rematch of the 2016 AA Final, won in shootout by LVR over the Knights.

Friday, LVR opened the scoring in the first half when Dehnel selfishly sent a pass through to Shianne Michalchuk who quickly deposited the ball into the back of the net.

The Bombers made it 2-0 early in the second half when a Poppy defender was called for a late tackle in the penalty area.

Dehnel calmly stepped up to the spot before drilling a low shot into the far-right corner.

Michalchuk completed the scoring, finding the back of the net for the third goal on a breakaway.

Bomber keeper Hanna Quinn was called upon to make a few saves for her third clean sheet of the tournament.

In three games LVR has outscored the opposition by a 11-0 count.

St. Thomas Moore advanced to the playoff round by winning Pool B in the 16-team tournament.

The Knights defeated Little Flower Academy of Vancouver 2-1 Friday morning to finish the round robin with a 3-0 record.

The other semi-final matchup has Arch Bishop Carney, winner of Pool C plays Okanagan Mission of Kelowna at 4 p.m.

The Bombers meet St. Thomas Moore at 6 p.m.

Both medal-round games are at Lakeside Pitch.

The other Kootenay team entered in the tournament, J. Lloyd Crowe of Trail, finished tied for third in Pool D and meets St. Thomas Aquinas of North Vancouver in Consolation Round action at 2 p.m.

LVR is searching for the school's fourth BC High School AA Girl's Soccer title.

The Bombers won last year, as well as back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998.
