UPDATE: Bridge fire considered arson, police investigating

Grand Forks RCMP are looking for the person or persons responsible for lighting the Hummingbird Bridge on fire after they found two jerry cans of gasoline set against the frame of the bridge on Saturday, Feb. 16.

The bridge fire is one of four recent arson cases the Grand Forks RCMP have been investigating over the past month, said Grand Forks RCMP staff sergeant Jim Harrison.

"This is the fourth fire believed to be arson in the North Fork area and that is really concerning us," said Harrison, adding they have no idea what the motive would be.

The other three fires occured on private properties in the same area of North Fork Road and involved out buildings. No one has been hurt in this new wave of criminal activity.

Police have idenitified a vehicle and person of interest already, said Harrison.

"If anybody in that area has seen anything that they think is suspicious please call us," said Harrison.

Due to the speedy response by the Grand Forks Fire Rescue Department, the bridge was structurally unscathed. It was inspected by EMCON and deemed safe to drive over, so traffic patterns will continue as usual, said Harrison.

Even using your rear view to put on your lipstick can get you pulled over said Sgt. Derrick Donovan of the West Kootenay Traffic Unit.

"On Feb. 11 at approximately 7 p.m.,  an officer from the Nelson West Kootenay Traffic Services, with the assistance of the Salmo RCMP, stopped a vehicle on Highway 3 West of Salmo which appeared to be driving in an erratic manner, Donovan said.

RCMP Traffic Services target distracted drivers in February

Texting while driving can lead to a fine of $167.

Reducing fatalities and serious injuries is the number one priority of the BC RCMP Traffic Services.

Which is why in February, RCMP officers around the province will be targetting distracted drivers.

"In the month of February police across B.C. will be targeting drivers who operate vehicles while using a handheld device," said Cpl Robert McDonald of BC RCMP Traffic Services.

Holding a cell phone in your hand on speaker phone is an offence under the Motor Vehicle Act of Using an Electronic Device While Driving and could result in a fine of $167.
