No one injured in truck vs train collision

No one was injured after a truck hit a train near Celgar this morning, according to Celgar manager of human resources Dean Gaudry.

Gaudry said the accident occurred just after 11 a.m., when heavy snow left a chip-truck driver unable to stop quickly enough to avoid a collision with the train.

Al Hitzroth resigns as Celgar boss

After a five-and-a-half-year tenure at the helm of the city’s largest commercial venture, Al Hitzroth will be bidding Zellstoff Celgar adieu.

Hitzroth, Celgar’s 55-year-old managing director, Operations & Technical, told The Source today that his final day will be February 24, as he relinquishes Celgar’s top spot to current director of strategic initiatives Kevin Anderson. Hitzroth will then be heading to New Brunswick to take on a new and exciting challenge within the pulp industry.

British Columbia Premier Christy Clark made an unprecedented visit to the Midway Mill, Monday, Feb. 6 to appreciate and learn from what the community has done to keep their mill running.

She toured the facility, spoke to the more than 30 employees who came in to meet her and learned a lot about what it took to get the mill running again, after it's closure in 2007 by Pope and Talbot. She was accompained by two cabinet ministers, the Speaker of the House, local councillors and MLA Boundary Similkamean John Slater.

2012 budget to include property tax increases for all but major industry

The City of Castlegar unveiled its $19-million 2012 budget to less-than thunderous applause Wednesday, as only seven people (not including city staff and council) showed up for the public meeting.

The turnout was disappointing, but not surprising, according to city councillor and finance committee chair Russ Hearne.

“It's similar to the turn out we've had in previous years," he said. “I think people are largely content that their money is being managed wisely."
