PROFILE: Teresa Rezansoff - School Trustee Grand Forks
1. Please give a brief summary of who you are and why you have decided to run for office.
My name is Teresa Rezansoff; I am a married parent to four children and have lived in Grand Forks for over 20 years. I am running for trustee because I care deeply about the outcomes for our children.
2. What is your background? Have you held office before? What skills do you bring to the job?
I have served four terms as a school trustee, and am currently the board chair. I involve myself in all aspects of trusteeship by participating fully in committee and liaison work. I am the vice-president of the BC School Trustees Association (BCSTA), an advocacy organization representing all sixty Boards of Education in the province.
I also volunteer my time in the community. Volunteer roles have included serving at the local, regional and provincial level as a coordinator for Special Olympics BC and I currently sit as a director for Boundary Family Individual Services Society (BFISS).
3. What do you think are the top three challenges facing the school district in the upcoming term?
I see funding and the changing face of education as the two most critical challenges. There simply must be more dollars invested by the province into public education. There is no greater investment than in our children, and the payouts are limitless.
Increased investment in public education is especially critical as the province launches its’ new education plan (www.bcedplan.ca). I am excited about the possibilities for our students, but many of the plan elements have long been in our classrooms. The challenge will be to push further and deeper to enhance and enrich the learning experiences for our students.
The third challenge is the current teacher job action. This is a provincial matter that has implications because of the uncertainty in knowing how long job action will continue or if it will escalate. Locally we must be vigilant in protecting the needs and interests of our students and work to ensure that we keep positive relationships with our teachers.
4. How do you think you can impact these challenges?
Yes, we have challenges, but by keeping my outlook positive and focused on students and their success, challenges are more easily overcome. I am a calm and reasoned thinker who always puts students first in any decision-making. I see the value and power in collaboration and working as a team to address issues.
Through my work at BCSTA I am able to ensure that the voice of small, rural school districts is heard. I believe that my efforts locally are enhanced by my provincial work and bring an informed perspective to my role.
5. If you could describe yourself in three words what would they be?
Caring, dedicated and responsible.
6. Other comments that you feel are important to the voters.
I would like to offer my thanks for the support I have received. It has been an honour and a privilege to work on behalf of the students of this school district. I am a stalwart advocate for our children and public education. I will continue to work diligently to ensure our students realize their potential and ambitions.
Thank you.
