PROFILE: Nipper Kettle, Greenwood Mayoral candidate
1. Please give a brief summary of who you are and why you have decided to run for office.
My name is Nipper Kettle and I am running for the office of Mayor of Greenwood. I would like to make our city more welcoming and business friendly, encourage growth and development and make it safe for our seniors and families.
2. What is your background? Have you held office before? If not what skills do you bring to the job if you are elected?
I moved to Greenwood in April 2010 from Houston, B.C. after working 30 plus years in the forest industry. I have many years of experience at the municipal level and many contacts in upper levels of government. I was first elected to Houston council in 1993 and served until 2001.
I was re-elected again as councillor for the district of Houston in 2008, I was a director on the board of Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako and a Director of the North West Regional Health District. I was Deputy Mayor of Houston when we moved to the warmer climate of Greenwood.
3. What do you think are the top three challenges facing the city in the upcoming term?
The top three challenges I see are aging infrastructure, business development, and crime.
The top three challenges I see are aging infrastructure, business development, and crime.
4. How do you think you can impact these challenges?
As mayor I would work with the team the city elects to develop a plan to search for grants to address the infrastructure needs. I would also meet with other levels of government to try and address crime in our city, and look at ways to encourage new business, cut the red tape and help all the existing businesses to improve and grow in a business friendly community.
5. If you could describe yourself in three words what would they be?
Approachable, energetic and open-minded.
6. Other comments that you feel are important to the voters.
A mayor must be willing to listen to each and every member of the community, everyone deserves a voice. As mayor and council we to have to work together as a team chosen by the community for the betterment of Greenwood if we are to survive these tough economic times. The city's needs must come first.
