CANDIDATE: Chris Hammett (GF -- Council)
Please give a brief summary of who you are and why you have decided to run for office.
My name is Chris Hammett and I’ve decided to run for city council because I am committed to this community and would like the opportunity to work with council and staff to promote economic growth.
What is your background? Have you held office before? What skills do you bring to the job if you are elected?
Recently, I have been a director and vice-chair for the Downtown Business Association in Grand Forks, and I was the account manager and associate publisher for the Grand Forks Gazette.
Previously, I chaired the marketing committee for the Downtown Langley Business Association, and sat on the City of Langley Business Recruitment and Retention committee.
What do you think are the top three challenges facing the city/region/school district in the upcoming term?
- Declining population; especially young families
- Lack of skilled employment opportunities eg. High Tech Industry & Manufacturing
- Lack of enough retail variety to encourage residents to stay in town and shop local
How do you plan on addressing these challenges?
By working with the city’s recently developed plan to promote business recruitment. I think that once the employment opportunities are met, the rest will follow.
If you could describe yourself in three words what would they be?
Hard working. Dedicated. Determined.
What is the one thing that makes you stand out as a candidate? OR What is the one thing you want people to know about you?
My past 10 years with the Gazette has given me the opportunity to meet many of our residents and I think that anyone who knows me knows that I don’t do things half way. I’m extremely hard working, and committed to any undertaking that I’m involved with.
