This summer, kids across the province will take to the skies, voyage through space, and follow authors to other worlds. 

The Grand Forks & District Public Library invites kids of all ages to join the fun by joining this year’s BC Summer Reading Club: Up, Up and Away! Sign-up is free and starts at the library on June 18th. Kids receive a special kit to keep track of their reading. If they read on 50 days this summer, they’ll be awarded a collectible medal.

Two male grizzly bear cubs named Blair and Terry, who were orphaned in the Kootenays in the fall of 2012, are on the road back to freedom. The cubs were orphaned in October when they were eight months old, after their mother came into conflict with humans and was killed. They were rescued and raised in captivity and are now ready to be released close to their home range.

It’s been 50 years since Canada's former Minister of National Health and Welfare, Judy LaMarsh told the House of Commons that “smoking is a contributory cause of lung cancer.”

This statement marked the start of a decades-long anti-smoking campaign that continues across the country to this day.

“We’ve come a long way,” said Canadian Cancer Society health promotion team leader Patti King, noting that Canada made this declaration seven months ahead of the United States Surgeon General.
