Election day is looming and Boundary residents need to decide who will get their vote. It's only a few more weeks until the May 14th election, and five candidates have stepped forward to represent the Boundary Similkameen region.

NDP candidate, Sam Hancheroff, is a native of Grand Forks. He was raised in the city and went to post-secondary school at Selkirk College in Castlegar.

Provincial legislative hopefuls were grilled at the all candidates meeting this week in Grand Forks amid cheers and heckles depending on the comments.

British Columbia has four area codes as of June 1

A new area code has been released across British Columbia to meet a growing demand for phone numbers. The area code, 236, was reserved by the Canadian Radio- television and Telecommunications Commission in 2011. At the time, it was expected that British Columbians would run out of phone numbers by 2016. To prevent that from happening, the number 236 will be available across the problems to fill a demand for new phone numbers. 

UPDATED: RCMP confirm, body found in Slocan is Daniel Crossley

Police have now confirmed that a body suspected to be that of a missing Slocan 18-year-old is, indeed, Daniel Crossley.

In a press release issued at 2:20 p.m. on Thursday, RCMP Sgt. Darryl Little said, "The RCMP are now able to confirm the identity of the body recovered  from the lake near Slocan City as that of Daniel Crossley, who was reported missing on April 23.

This May 14th two Grand Forks businesses along with the Grand Forks Community Trails Society  and the Grand Forks Cycling Club are partnering to encourage Grand Forks voters to bike to vote.

Former premier endorses independent candidate Mischa Popoff

Bill Vander Zalm, former B.C. Premier and leader of the successful anti-HST campaign, has endorsed Mischa Popoff, an independent conservative candidate in Boundary-Similkameen.

Popoff was dropped by B.C. Conservative Leader John Cummins for what Cummins said were “insensitive and disrespectful” comments about single mothers. Popoff denied the accusation and said he was speaking in support of two-parent families which have a better record of raising children than single parents.

Midway Community Gardens in full swing this year

The Midway Community Gardens are up and ready for planting this season. The gardens enable anyone to grow their own food, regardless of how much space they have at home. It’s an affordable process with raised garden beds and garden plots costing $5 for the year. After that, gardeners just need to get their seeds and put in some labour so they can reap the rewards.

Saddle store relocates to Greenwood

Greenwood residents won’t have to go far to get their leather-work done. Ingram Creek Saddlery is moving from rural Midway to the main strip in Greenwood.

“We will be right between the bank and the liquor store,” said Bob Bugeaud, who owns the store with his wife Margaret Ann.

The saddle store has been in business for about five years in Midway, but they have always worked out of their farm, which is located 9 km West of Highway 3.
